Kidney With Renal Pyramids. Each kidney normally has two or three major calyces which unite to form the renal pelvis. In turn the major calyces join to form a funnel shaped structure called renal pelvis that collects urine.
Several minor calyces unite to form a major calyx. The apex of each pyramid is called a renal papilla and each papilla projects into a small depression called a minor calyx plural calyces. Urine drains from the renal pelvis into the ureter.
Medulla inner region of the kidney contains 8 12 renal pyramids.
Re nal pyr a mid rē năl pir ă mid one of several pyramidal masses seen on longitudinal section of the kidney. The renal medulla contains the renal pyramids where urine formation takes place. There are 8 18 renal pyramids in each kidney. Impaired renal perfusion may lead to abnormalities of the pyramids cortex or renal vasculature which include changes such as acute tubular necrosis medullary or cortical necrosis and renal vein thrombosis.
